FEBRUARY 7,     the parliament registered the Draft Law “On Amending the Law of Ukraine “On Protecting the Environment” (concerning the enhancement of the local government authority) (#10009). The Drat Law has a suggestion to vest local governments with the authority to administer local environmental protection fund money including the right to use them with the purpose of providing citizens with high quality potable water. It has also been suggested to give local government the right to determine the list of environmental protection activities.

The current legislation gives local governments the right to channel the environmental protection funds only for targeted environmental protection and resource saving activities to be determined by the Ministry of Ecology.
