FEBRUARY 14, the parliament approved the Draft Law “On Amending the Law of Ukraine “On Comprehensive Secondary Education” (concerning the reorganization of comprehensive educational establishments)” (#9062) in the first reading. The purpose of the document is to introduce the proper public oversight over the closure or reorganization of schools.

The document stipulates the reorganization or closure of schools to take place only upon the decision of the local referendum (or all-hands meeting) of a village, town or city. The current legislation envisions taking into account the approval of territorial communities with regard to village schools only.

The law is expected to increase the public oversight and to eliminate cases of unjustified closures of communally-owned schools.
