Strategic Border Location
Uzhhorod is the only regional center in Ukraine bordering the EU. It hosts the Uzhhorod – Vyšné Nemecké international checkpoint and lies 27 km from the Hungarian crossing Chop – Záhony.
Population & Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs)
Official population: 115,449 (as of 01.01.2023)
Estimated actual population: 130,000–135,000 due to inflow of displaced persons
Registered IDPs: 27,293, incl. 8,494 children, 3,057 pensioners, and 891 people with disabilities
Estimated unregistered IDPs: up to 5,000+ (living in rented housing or with relatives)
Infrastructure Load Due to IDPs
100% occupancy of municipal kindergartens and schools. Some institutions operate in two shifts to accommodate IDP children.
Municipal public transport system (buses and electric buses) operates under high load, especially in residential areas with compact temporary settlements and shelters.
The water distribution system is over 40 years old in some districts and not designed for rapid +25% population growth. The city is preparing projects for water infrastructure modernization (e.g., on Pavla Chubynskoho St., DREAM-UA-240124).
Uzhhorod hosts Uzhhorod National University (10,000+ students). In 2024, it launched a bioinformatics program to train future professionals for a Biopharma facility planned for 2026.
