Type of territory: de-occupied
Population: 29500
Area of municipality: 1779,6 km2
Priority projects:
1. Reconstruction of the existing building (food service unit) of the Ivankiv Central District Hospital
Additional peculiarities of the municipality:
The Ivankiv municipality is located on the banks of the Teteriv River in the northern part of Ukrainian Polissya. The municipality is located in a border region that borders the Republic of Belarus. It is the largest region in Ukraine by area, including 81 settlements united in 20 starostas.
The 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant divided the life of the municipality into before and after, as Ivankiv is located just 50 km from the nuclear power plant. The entire territory of the municipality is radioactively contaminated, and its residents are victims of the accident. This caused the region's depression and financial insolvency.
On 24 February 2022, Ivankiv municipality was one of the first in Ukraine to be invaded by Russian occupation forces, who were trying to advance on Kyiv through the Chornobyl zone. The occupation lasted 36 days. From the first days of the war, the municipality was completely disconnected from water supply, electricity, and heating systems, and there was no mobile or Internet connection for more than a month. The complete occupation of the community led to a humanitarian catastrophe.
Active hostilities took place on the territory of the municipality, mainly in the western part. Destruction of varying degrees was recorded in 47 settlements. The total number of damaged objects is 2544. The vast majority of the destruction occurred in the private sector: about 2,385 buildings were damaged, including 481 that were completely destroyed. In addition, the following buildings were damaged: 15 educational institutions, 1 sports facility, 5 healthcare facilities, 2 religious institutions, 17 administrative buildings, 25 cultural institutions, 11 bridges, 4 water towers, cellular towers, and the premises of the Administrative Services Centre and the Museum of History and Local Lore were completely destroyed. A large number of businesses, institutions, shops and pharmacies were damaged and looted.
As the municipality has suffered significantly during the occupation, the top priorities now are to rebuild the destroyed infrastructure and private sector, modernise utilities, and provide quality services to residents.
Another important task is to preserve the cultural heritage of the region and develop tourism.
As it was impossible for us to rebuild the municipality alone, we turned to the international community to demonstrate that Ukraine needs help, but can also be a reliable strategic partner. Each step we took was designed to demonstrate our ability to transform, learn, and utilise international support effectively.
With the help of international charitable organisations, the community is continuing to restore roads, bridges and housing, as well as communal services. However, there are still many challenges to overcome.
